Personal Development

Personal development at Ongar Primary School

Our personal development programme supports every child to grow into a confident, responsible and well‑rounded young person. Through a blend of learning, enrichment and real‑life experiences, pupils build character, understand the world around them and develop the skills they need for the future. We aim to ensure every child thrives in school and feels ready for the next stages of their education and life beyond.

Character and personal growth

We inspire children to become confident, thoughtful and self‑motivated learners who believe in their own potential. Pupils are encouraged to recognise their strengths, embrace challenges and take pride in the person they are becoming. By nurturing ambition, reflection and a strong sense of purpose, we help every child build the foundations for a bright and fulfilling future.

Relationships, wellbeing and healthy lifestyles

  • We teach children how to understand their emotions, build positive relationships and make healthy choices for their bodies and minds. By learning how to manage feelings, resolve conflicts and look after their physical health, pupils develop the skills they need to feel safe, supported and ready to learn. This focus on wellbeing ensures every child can flourish socially and emotionally.     Our PHSE curriculum

Citizenship, society and democracy

  • We encourage children to understand the world around them and recognise the part they play in shaping it. By learning about fairness, shared responsibility and how decisions are made, pupils begin to see themselves as active contributors to their school and community. This helps them grow into thoughtful, informed young citizens who are ready to participate positively in society.

Equality, diversity and cultural understanding

  • We help children understand and appreciate the many ways people and communities can be similar and different. By introducing them to a wide range of experiences, stories and perspectives, pupils learn to treat others with fairness and respect while developing a broader view of the world around them. This supports their growing understanding of life in modern Britain and helps them become confident, considerate individuals who value others, challenge unkindness and feel secure in their own identity.

Safety, risk and responsible choices

  • We equip children with the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe as they grow and become more independent. Pupils learn how to recognise risks, make sensible decisions and seek help whenever they are unsure or concerned, whether in school, online or in the wider world. This helps them develop the awareness and responsibility they need to navigate new situations safely and make positive choices as they move through their education.

Wider experiences and preparation for the future

  •  We broaden children’s horizons by offering a rich and varied programme of enrichment that inspires curiosity and builds ambition. Pupils are encouraged to explore new ideas, encounter a wide range of experiences and perspectives, and step beyond what is familiar to them. These opportunities deepen their learning, strengthen their confidence and independence, and ensure they are well prepared for future stages of education and the wider world beyond school.
